More Information about Recycling
Why do Lidl use plastic in packaging?
Plastic packaging serves important functions – such as containing product, protecting goods in transport, preserving the product and extending its shelf life and communicating product information to customers.
However, we are very aware of the need to reduce the use of plastics in our products packaging and replacing them with more sustainable alternatives. We are also working on increasing the recyclability of the materials. For this reason, we have made ambitious packaging commitments to support the circular economy.
In-store customer ‘Recycling Stations’
While we continue to reduce and improve our plastic packaging we want to support our customers by reducing the amount of packaging they take home.
Our new ‘Recycling Stations’ include three bin shoots, each for a different type of packaging.
What can I put in the recycling bin in store?
Cardboard & Paper
- Carboard packaging boxes e.g. cereal boxes, cosmetic paper boxes, etc.
- Newspapers, magazines, envelopes, etc.
- Coffee cup from Lidl’s vending machines.
- Unwanted shopping receipts.
Plastic
- Fruit and vegetable plastic wrapping and trays
- Old or broken carrier plastic bags
- Beverage plastic bottles
Other Recyclables – all other recyclable materials are accepted in this bin such as aluminium and beverage cans.
Not an extensive list. Why?
The recyclability of the plastic depends on many different factors (Polymer type, use of laminates and adhesives so it is important to read the labelling, we cannot provide a list of all products). When you place material in our bins it is assessed in store and by our waste providers. If the materials are contaminated, or made from a material that cannot be recycled, they will be sorted in recycling plants – all materials that can be recycled will be recycled. It is important to support our providers by sorting the materials into the correct stream, ensuring they are clean and dry.
We would encourage you to place any excess packaging you don’t want to bring home and we will ensure we make the best use of it possible.
