At Lidl, we provide top quality and market leading value whilst also ensuring our products are ethically sourced. We are committed to ambitious sustainability targets in a variety of product categories. This won’t be achieved overnight but we want to share our journey with you.

Overview

As a large grocery retailer, the majority of our impact and therefore one of the main areas in which we strive for greater sustainability across our business is the sourcing of our products. That’s why we’re fully committed to ensuring that our buying power is driving positive change for producers, communities, and the environment, both in Ireland and further afield.

After all, sourcing responsibly means we can offer you goods that are produced to the highest quality, environmental and social standards – allowing you to choose sustainably sourced options at affordable prices.

Our Commitment to the Circular Economy

Packaging

It is important to note that packaging, including packaging made from plastic, plays an important role protecting products, informing consumers and reducing food waste.

Deposit Return Scheme

In the summer of 2021, we became the first Irish retailer to announce the roll out of reverse vending machines to facilitate the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS). The machines enable our customers to deposit used plastic beverage bottles and aluminium cans in return for money-back vouchers redeemable in-store.

Preventing Ocean Plastic

We became the first retailer in Ireland to announce the launch of Prevented Ocean Plastic (POP) fresh food packaging using “ocean bound plastic”*, plastic that would have otherwise ended up in the ocean and that is now recycled and reintroduced into our packaging.
