Healthy Eating

With more than 220 stores in Ireland, we serve more than 1.5 million customers every week. We recognise that food production and consumption significantly impact the climate, biodiversity, and our customers’ health. As a key player in Lidl Ireland’s food supply chain, we feel a responsibility to provide our customers with the best products for a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

The Planetary Health Diet has been developed by the EAT Lancet Commission and is a scientifically based nutrition concept that focuses on both human and planetary health. In alignment with the PHD, we aim to continually expand our selection of plant-based foods by 2050. By 2030, Lidl plans to increase the proportion of plant-based foods sold – including fruit and vegetables and whole grains – by 20% across all 31 countries where Lidl operates. Additionally, we will be the first food retailer to ensure transparency across all food categories in our product range in all 31 countries where we have stores.

Our Activities at a glance

As part of our A Better Tomorrow sustainability strategy, we have developed targets to offer our customers the best product range for a healthy, more sustainable lifestyle. Our activities are based on three pillars“Healthy Nutrition”, “Sustainable Nutrition” and “Transparency & Empowerment”.

We are committed improving the nutritional aspects of our product range. By 2030, Lidl Ireland aims to increase the proportion of whole grains in relation to total grains in the assortment to 20%. We are also expanding our selection of whole grain products. We intend to offer at least one whole grain option in all relevant product groups by 2030.

As part of Lidl’s 2025 reduction strategy, we will reduce added sugar and salt in the products of our own brands by a sales-weighted 20%.

Our product range of fruit and vegetables is an important part of our strategy. At Lidl, we will continue to offer our customers a large choice of fresh fruit and vegetables every day. In addition, we focus on offering a selection of seasonal and local foods – from organic farming wherever possible.

By 2030, Lidl Ireland aims to increase the proportion of plant-based protein sources by 17% and expand our range to empower customers and give them more variety to choose from.

We have also pledged to reduce food waste by 50% by 2030. To achieve this, we have been following a holistic, end-to-end approach along the entire value chain for many years, to minimise food losses at every stage
