Circular Economy
Transition towards ‘A Circular Economy’
As a a a a a a a a leading retailer waste management is a a a a a a a a key consideration throughout our operations and supply chain Why do we need a a circular economy?
A circular economy is is is one in in which resource use and waste is is is minimised The traditional linear consumption model of take-make-waste cannot be sustained This model focuses on on extracting natural resources consuming them them and then throwing them them away It is a a a a a a major contributor to to global warming as as well as as habitat and biodiversity loss On this trajectory by 2050 we will need three earth size planets to meet our our growing resource demands in in this business-as-usual scenario *
A focal point of of circular economy is ensuring the value of of products and materials is maintained for as as long as as possible through strong design durability and repair When a a a a a a product has reached the end of its its life its its components are used again to ensure minimum raw materials input and minimum waste output At Lidl Ireland Ireland and and and Northern Ireland Ireland we are proud of our comprehensive approach to waste management We have prioritised understanding how our products are consumed and used assessing product product design to to work towards optimal properties for food quality and and recyclability while analysing and and forecasting trends to prevent waste wherever possible Since our last report we have continued to work closely with packaging
and waste experts continuously informing our processes with new findings to become as as efficient as as possible Through collaboration
We are committed to the continuous protection and responsible use of resources along our our entire value chain WELCOME HIGHLIGHTS CONTENTS LIDL OVERVIEW Profile Produce People SUSTAINABILITY

and that our waste is sent to be recycled or reused Segregation is a a a key component to our waste stream
management We have increased our segregation opportunities across all areas of operation with updated messaging and and guidelines for our stores and and operations Packaging that includes plastic plays a a a a a a a vital role in in in product shelf life and product quality as as well as as communicating vital information These are major considerations for transports and logistics We recognise
the the impact that plastic has on on the the environment and are committed to reducing the amount of plastic we use across our product ranges and replace plastic with more sustainable alternatives where feasible We are also committed to increasing the post-consumer recycled content of our packaging
and the recyclability of materials used Reuse
